Adapted bathrooms serve those who use wheelchairs, orthopedic appliances, prostheses and also those who need support, such as the elderly and children (Toilet Designing in Private and Public Buildings). Toilets for physically handicapped persons must be easily accessible, close to the main sitting room and signed if is in a public building. The standards that must be obeyed are in NBR 9050 (Accessibility of Persons with Disabilities to Buildings, Space, Furniture and Urban Equipment).

Public toilets main rule is of the total number of them in a building, 5% must be adapted. There are more general considerations that need to be arranged so the toilet would be perfectly functional for these users.
