Does the layout of a kitchen intrigue you? Implementation of elements, lighting(Planning and Designing a Kitchen According to these 5 Rules)… Nicolas Sallavuard with the architecture agency Studio d’archi, explains how to design a kitchen according to the rules of the art. The arrangement of a kitchen obeys a well established protocol. Sense of circulation, called triangle of activity, distances, storage and furniture… everything that makes the kitchen a functional space, pleasant to live and cook. First, make a perfect triangle between stove, sink and fridge. In order to facilitate your travel, it is important that the distance between these three zones is as close as possible. Second, the dirty dishes – before being placed in the dishwasher, they pass through the garbage and eventually the sink: these three elements (trash, sink and dishwasher) must be close to each other, with a simple and easy circulation. The cupboards and drawers for storing the clean dishes must also be near the dishwasher. Third, the sizes: the worktop of the kitchen must be at the height of your belt (between 85 and 95 cm) so that you can reach the bottom of the sink without bending. The oven is preferably placed at eye level. A bar shelf must be at the height of your elbow (between 110 and 115 cm). To avoid bumping your head to the extractor hood, it must be about 60 cm from the plates. In the highest storage cupboards the last accessible shelf should be about 220 cm.
Fourth – respect the measurements: large household appliances, such as the oven or the dishwasher, fit into a square of 60 cm side (this is the minimum size of the worktop). But nowadays, the cooks prefer more and more deeper plans (65 cm) for more comfort. To facilitate traveling in your kitchen, leave at least 70 cm of free space in front of your furniture. 90 cm will allow you to bypass easily an open cupboard or dishwasher. 120 cm allows two persons to work in the kitchen without bothering one to another. Fifth – the lighting: Even if the sink is often placed in front of the window, natural lighting is not enough. To provide a medium brightness to the entire room you’ll need additional lights. Install powerful lights pointed at different areas of the worktop. Directional spots, arranged under the tall furniture, are ideal. Also do not neglect ambient lighting, especially if the kitchen is open to the dining room- color LED embedded in the floor, neon colored on top furniture and other. Rules are bellow:
Rule 1: the triangle of activity
Rule 2: Routing Clean and Dirty
Rule 3: the heights to respect
Rule 4: Measures to be respected
Rule 5: Light
